Who is Fred McGrail?
I am a process-based artist based in Birmingham, UK, where I work from my studio in Digbeth.
I have been a practising artist for over a decade, completing my Masters degree in 2019. My practise has continually evolved through extensive experimentation with materials, techniques and processes.
Across these years of experimentation, I have honed a meticulous and intentional way of working that centres on a particular use of materials to transform the surface. My paintings are recognised for their highly textured appearance and the multiple layers that build their depth.
My recent works, and upcoming collection embody everything I value in my practise, the tensions between attraction and repulsion, beauty and discomfort. Through carefully considered colour choices and my distinctive methods of building texture, I aim to create pieces that evoke an internal reaction, pulling the viewer in while unsettling them at the same time. This Juxtaposition sits at the core of what drives my artistic exploration.
